CMSS Students Return To Earth

April 19, 2016

Close to 250 Cabot Middle School students spent the weekend in space! Last weekend, April 15-17, CMSS 5th graders traveled to Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama.

Two hundred forty-three students along with 40 staff members and 53 chaperones had an out of this world experience. Students were engaged in activities focused on science, mathematics, and engineering.

Coordinator Carrie Lair says while at camp, students participated in simulations and activities that helped them learn all about astronaut training. Students trained on the MAT (multi-axis trainer) and 5DF chair (5 degrees of freedom). Additionally, they had the opportunity to construct and launch rockets, as well as, ride the G-Force and Space Shot.

Students also witnessed a once in a lifetime experience. The ISS flew over while they watched from underneath the Pathfinder Shuttle.

The highlight and culminating event of the weekend is the space mission. Each group completes a simulated launch and landing of a space shuttle. During the mission, trainees must work together to overcome problems they encounter in order to successfully complete their mission.
