Rare Opportunity: Live Surgery Performed For Students
October 11, 2016
Cabot High School Medical Academy students experienced a rare opportunity last Friday. They had a chance to see what it's really like to be a surgeon.
Midsouth Orthopedics in Little Rock which represents Arthex Surgical Products brought in Little Rock Surgeon Dr. Joel Smith. Dr. Smith works for Ortho Arkansas. In front of hundreds of students, he performed a rotator cuff surgery on a cadaver shoulder onstage at the CHS Auditorium.
After the surgery, Dr. Smith answered questions. About 20 medical honors students then had the opportunity to get an up close experience with other cadaver specimens. They even had the chance to try the tools Dr. Smith used to perform the surgery.
This is the second year this team has visited Cabot High School. Last year, Dr. Smith performed ACL surgery on a cadaver knee.
