National Athletic Training Month - March 2017
March 14, 2017
National Athletic Training Month is held every March in order to spread awareness about the important work of athletic trainers.
It's a time each year when there is an extra focus on educating everyone about the importance and value of athletic trainers.
This year's slogan is, “Your protection is our priority.” Athletic Trainers are health care professionals. Highly educated and dedicated to the job at hand, athletic trainers can be found in high schools, colleges, corporations, professional sports, the military, performing arts, clinics, hospitals, and physician offices. Sports injuries can be serious and athletic trainers can save lives.
The Cabot School District employs four outstanding athletic trainers that are experts in their field. We are honored to have the best of the best caring for our kids. A huge thank you to our amazing athletic trainers:
Jason Cates – Head Athletic Trainer
Jennifer Asberry – Assistant Athletic Trainer
Lyndsey Rich – Assistant Athletic Trainer and Sports Medicine Teacher
Hollie Rush – Assistant Athletic Trainer and Sports Medicine Teacher
The district takes pride in being the best of the best and athletic training is no different. Cabot was recently awarded the National Athletic Trainers' Associations “Safe Sports School 1st Team” designee for the second time. In 2013, Cabot was awarded the three year award (2013-2016) and at the time they were the first school in the state of Arkansas and the 13th school in the country to receive this award.
This award champions safety and recognizes secondary schools that provide safe environments for student athletes and reinforces the importance of providing the best level of athletic health care, injury prevention, and treatment.
In order to achieve Safe Sport School status, athletic programs must meet the following criteria:
- Create a positive athletic health care administrative system
- Provide or coordinate pre-participation physical examinations
- Promote safe and appropriate practice and competition facilities
- Plan for selection, fit function and proper maintenance of athletic equipment
- Provide a permanent, appropriately equipped area to evaluate and treat injured athletes
- Develop injury and illness prevention strategies, including protocols for environmental conditions
- Provide or facilitate injury intervention
- Create and rehearse a venue-specific Emergency Action Plan
- Provide or facilitate psychosocial consultation and nutritional counseling/education
- Educate athletes and parents on the potential benefits and risks in sports, as well as their responsibilities
The Cabot School District's Sports Medicine Program is also nationally recognized and serves as a model to other school districts.
Thank you again to our Cabot School District Athletic Trainers. We salute you for providing quality health care to our athletes and employees every day. We appreciate each and every one of you!
