October School Board Recognition 2017 & Annual Report to the Public

October 18, 2017

An amazing running group and several tech savvy students were recognized at the October Cabot School Board meeting.

Cabot Country Cruisers

The Cabot Country Cruisers promote a healthy lifestyle in our community through running, walking, cycling, and swimming.  Since 1996, they've been hosting the “Spring Fling 5K.” The 2017 race was held in March. At the school board meeting, President Robert Harrell, along with members Stacy Cates, Aimee Stepp, Rebecca Schiermeyer, Cathy Jarrett, Cindy Yancey, and Keith Knight presented the district with a $5,000 check. Physical Education teacher Jamie Oiker says the donation will be used to purchase equipment and curriculum for our P.E. programs.

The Cabot County Cruisers is an amazing group that has a great partnership with the Cabot School District. If you would like more information on this group, click HERE.

Their upcoming Inspiration Run, where they help promote fitness by running and biking 26 miles and visiting 14 Cabot schools will also take place Oct. 27th.

Girls Who Code

This past spring, CHS teacher Danielle Lovellette began a chapter of “Girls Who Code,” to encourage young women to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) field.

Two of Ms. Lovellette's students, senior Nicole Hartsel and sophomore Miranda Thomson, were recently invited to participate in an event hosted by “Girls Who Code” and Walmart. They had the opportunity to meet “Girls Who Code” founder and CEO Reshma Saujani.

Nicole and Miranda were also the only two students among hundreds in attendance that were interviewed on stage by Lt. Governor Tim Griffin. They discussed how they became interested in technology and why it was so important for them to learn how to code.

Ms. Lovellette, Nicole, and Miranda shared with Dr. Thurman and our Cabot School Board about “Girls Who Code,” and what it was like to speak to hundreds of their peers about their interest in technology.
