CHS Teacher Angela Beason Named VFW Teacher of the Year

January 22, 2018

A Cabot High School teacher has received a top honor!

Angela Beason was recently recognized by VFW Post 7769 as the 2017 Teacher of the Year.  The VFW annually recognizes the nation's top classroom elementary, junior high and high school teachers who teach citizenship education topics regularly and promote America's history and traditions effectively.

Mrs. Beason was nominated by VFW Post Past Commander Ken Adams. The nomination for Mrs. Beason stated, "Mrs. Beason is currently the Mathematics Department Chair for Cabot High School, and has been teaching there for 15 years.  During this time period, she has been an advocate of the Wreaths Across America (WAA) campaign.  In 2014, she was at a ceremony where only 181 wreaths were delivered.  When a Gold Star Mother asked her if there were enough wreaths available so that her son could have one, Mrs. Beason knew she had to do something.

Later that year, she was the school district's sole point of contact for the WAA campaign stop. Since that day, three years ago, her tenacity has been the key to over 6000 Veteran's headstones receiving a wreath, and a testament to the "Remember, Honor, Teach" motto for WAA.  Last year, through her leadership, she was able to find sponsors to provide an additional 5000 wreaths for another Veteran's cemetery. This year, her organization has accumulated almost 10,000 wreaths for Veterans.

Mrs. Beason is also a board member of The Arkansas Run for the Fallen, a 501c(3) entity, whose sole purpose is honoring those heroes that have died, and their families left behind. Throughout the year she plans and coordinates events for Gold Star families. She coordinated the Arkansas Traveling Fallen Hero Memorial set up at her school. During that time period, the school's ROTC cadets stood vigil over the memorial while the students could walk through the memorial and learn about the heroes. Every year, her students write thank you cards to Veteran teachers and their spouses.  She also has had the honor in teaching tow Gold Star children. She teamed up with state legislators to ensure they knew their benefits and scholarship opportunities."

Congratulations Mrs. Beason! We are so proud of your dedication to our students, veterans, and their families!
