CJHN, I Believe, I Belong Continues

February 21, 2020

The I Believe, I Belong initiative continues at Cabot Junior High North. The initiative is to help students feel like they belong. Every nine weeks they develop goals and ways to achieve them.

Recently, the student council sponsored a school-wide art project to spotlight the various talents and interests of the students. This culminated with a pep rally and a very diverse set of obstacles for students to compete in Friday, February 14.

Here is a synopsis of the event written by Mrs. Dawn Brown:

Cheer and Dance teams welcomed the crowd with enthusiasm. Jenna Cook, student council president, opened the rally by introducing Brodie Brown, student council vice president, as the keynote speaker over this year's theme.

He said, “We hope these displays and today's relay race will be an example of how we all belong to a talented group of students and teachers that believe in us and support us with our gifts and ideas. We also hope you have been inspired to meet new people with similar interests or try new things.”

Displays around the school included fun ideas such as fishing, hunting, skiing, sports, art, baking, spending time with family, and so much more. Mikayla Traw, Halia Robbins, and Madison Matlock announced the sponsors for this year's student council t-shirts.

These sponsors made it possible for over 900 students to have a shirt designed by the student council to show students they are supported as a group by other students and teachers here at CJHN:

First Electric Cooperative
Dealer Detail Services
Red River Dodge
Central Bank
Pinnacle Structures Inc.
Cabot T-shirt Company
Apex Auto Group
Safari Pets
State Farm-Grant Pryor
Iron Brush Salon
Owen Orthodontics
Melikian Law Firm
Lonoke County Safe Haven
Popcorn Spot

Following their recognition, Brodie Brown commentated while 40 pre-selected students came together from 40 separate classes to determine strengths of each participant to run a race highlighting talents to include math, forensic, art, science, and fitness.

Olivia Harris and Jersey Walton created obstacles that coordinated individual and team efforts. Hunter expressed excitement for the competition saying, “Everyone was jumping around and moving so quickly through the course!“

Prizes were awarded to the winning team and students prepared for the daily recitation of the pledge led by Kallen Spencer, student council representative. The most beautiful moment of the rally was the unified voice of all students as they stood at attention calling out the Pledge of Allegiance in unison.

“We are really lucky to work at a school with students who are so well-behaved and aspire to do great things,” noted student council advisor, Dawn Brown. CJHN hopes to continue their efforts in making sure everyone feels they belong. They are especially grateful to all the community support and administrative freedom they have been given to create opportunities for students to grow.
