CMSS Students Blast Off Into Space

April 29, 2015

April 29th, 2015

Cabot Middle School South students recently took part in an out of this world experience. They just returned from Space Camp. It was held April 24th-26th in Huntsville, Alabama.

This is the 20th year for CMSS to take 5th graders on the trip which included 242 students, 55 chaperones, and 35 staff members from across the district. Ten students received partial or full scholarships through local donations from organizations.

The focus of the Space Camp Program is to enhance the understanding of Aerospace Science and to motivate young people to join the ranks of space pioneers and challenge them to dream of a future in space.

The trip centers on hands-on learning. Throughout the weekend, tasks and problems must be solved using an approach that combines teamwork and listening, as well as reading, writing and math components.

Some of the activities include simulations, such as, the M.A.T, 5 degrees of freedom chair, space mission, rocket construction and launch, rock wall climbing, Mission to Mars simulator, G-Force, and museum scavenger hunt.

Carrie Lair is the Space Camp Coordinator for Cabot Middle School South. She says plans for the trip begin in August. Staff from CMSS and other schools, along with volunteers help ensure students have the best experience possible and by seeing all the smiles in the pictures, we know students had a blast!

*Cabot Middle School North students will also be attending Space Camp. They leave this Friday, May 1st-May 3rd. They will be taking 296 5th grade students, 54 chaperones, and 25 staff members including two nurses. We'll be sure to share their pictures as soon as they get back!
