Lunch Box Connection feeding Cabot families and kids during school break

December 30, 2014

Dec. 30th, 2014

Since 2012, Susan Hedin has made it her mission to provide lunch for families and students in Cabot during school breaks. Unfortunately, for many kids when school is out they may miss a meal. Hedin says when she heard about the need, she knew she had to do something.

That's when the Lunch Box Connection was born. During school breaks she rounds up volunteers, which includes many students, Cabot School District staff and community members to help her bag sack lunches for hundreds of families.

Hedin says it costs about $150 a day to provide the meals and on most days she serves about 100 people. The money to buy the food comes from churches, people in the community, friends, strangers, anyone willing to donate.

THV 11 recently came out to see how the Lunch Box Connection is making a difference. Hedin says she's spoken to many parents who've expressed how much the Lunch Box Connection means to them. It's brought her to tears many times and that's why she continues her work. She says she won't turn anyone away.

If you would like to donate or volunteer, email lunchboxconnection@gmail.com

Lunches will continue to be served from 11:15 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. in the cafeteria at Central Elementary School on December 31st, January 1st and 2nd.

Hedin is already preparing for Spring Break. The Lunch Box Connection will again be providing lunches starting March 20th and March 23rd-27th.
