September 2016 School Board Recognition

September 28, 2016

The Cabot Country Cruisers, National Merit Semifinalists and AP Scholars were recognized at the meeting. Schools also made presentations to board members.

Cabot Country Cruisers

The Cabot Country Cruisers promote a healthy lifestyle in our community through running, walking, cycling, and swimming.  Since 1996, they've been hosting the “Spring Fling 5K.” The 2016 race was held in March. At the school board meeting, President Robert Harrell, along with members Cindi Yancy, Cathy Jarrett, and Kristen Taylor presented the district with a $5,000 check. Physical Education teacher Jamie Oiker says the donation will be used to purchase equipment and curriculum for our P.E. programs.

Thank you Cabot Country Cruisers!

National Merit Semifinalists

The district is proud to recognize our 10 National Merit Semifinalists for 2017.

The National Merit® Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter this program by taking the Preliminary SAT and by achieving a particular score on the exam. There are around 1.5 million students that participate in this exam every year. Of those students, about 16,000, or 1% of the total graduating seniors, have scores which qualify them as Semifinalists.

Arkansas has 143 National Merit Semifinalists from 35 schools this year, and 10 of those are from Cabot. This places us 5th in the state.

Congratulations to Clay Bellou, Benjamin Cameron, Avery Elliott, Michael Fredericks, Jared Gilliam,
Christen Johnson, Amin Nadirali, Landon Teer,
Colin Thompson, and Brandon Weidling.

AP Scholars

Students enroll in AP or Advanced Placement courses to gain the experience of college-level work within the safety and structure of the high school environment. Students have the opportunity to gain college credit for these courses if they succeed not only in the classroom, but also on their AP exams.

These are typically 3-4 hour-long comprehensive exams at the end of the year that assesses a student's knowledge of a particular subject. AP Exams are given a numerical score of 1-5, which correlates to the level of preparedness for college. A score of 3, 4, or 5 on an AP Exam is considered a successful score. The College Board presents AP Scholar Awards in recognition of those students who have attained college-level achievement through multiple courses and multiple exams.

The Cabot School District is proud to announce that Cabot had 83 AP Scholars for the 2016 exams. This is an increase of 10 award recipients from 2015. Many of our AP Scholars graduated in May. However, the school board had the honor of recognizing three groups of scholars that are currently enrolled at Cabot High School.
