May 12, 2017

It was a big day for Cabot High School as Governor Asa Hutchinson spoke to more than 1,500 tenth and eleventh grade students in Panther Arena. The governor brought his spring Computer Science Coding Tour to CHS, Friday, May 12.

He spoke to students encouraging them to take coding classes and shared a video promoting computer science. Students also had the opportunity to ask Governor Hutchinson questions about the future of coding.

Cabot Mayor Bill Cypert, Representative Tim Lemons, Representative Joe Farrer, Representative Roger Lynch, and Cabot School Board Member Mark Russell also attended the assembly.

Governor Hutchinson also had the opportunity to visit with several teachers. He congratulated Principal Casey Hanna and Principal Georgia Chastain. Cabot Middle School South received nearly $35,000 in Reward Funds from the Arkansas Department of Education. The Arkansas School Recognition Program provides financial awards to public schools that achieve high student performance and high student academic growth. CMSS performed in the Top 6%-10%.

Governor Hutchinson then headed to Champs Hall where he toured two classrooms. Students were excited to showcase some of their work which included, 3D printing, and coding projects.

Superintendent Dr. Tony Thurman stated, “It's an honor for Governor Hutchinson to come to Cabot High School and see first-hand the dedication and commitment we have to educating our kids and ensuring their success. It's also a wonderful opportunity to showcase our impressive computer science program, students, and teachers.”

Cabot High School is among only a few schools in Arkansas implementing a new AP Computer Science Principles class in its curriculum this year. It's the first year the class is being offered nationwide by the College Board. If students receive a certain score on the AP Exam, they are eligible for college credit.

As part of the governor's coding tour, Cabot High School will be featured in a nationwide video to help recruit businesses to Arkansas by showcasing education initiatives designed to prepare today's students for success in tomorrow's workforce.

Thank you Governor Asa Hutchinson for visiting Cabot High School!
