Cabot Panther Awarded First Ever Women's Triathlon Scholarship in AR

November 17, 2017

It was a great day for Cabot and for senior Panther Melanie Abbott as she was awarded the first ever Women's Triathlon College Scholarship in Arkansas! Melanie is not only the first in the state to receive this honor, but she's also the first Cabot Panther to ever receive this type of athletic scholarship.

Melanie signed her letter of intent to play for Drury University, where she will compete in triathlons consisting of swim, cycling, and running. Melanie has been training and competing for two years and has completed a total of eight triathlons. She has been training on her own and looks forward to working with a coach and teammates.

In 2014, the NCAA approved triathlons as the next emerging sport for women for NCAA Division I, Division II and Division III member institutions.

As an emerging sport for women, triathlons embark on the journey to become a full-fledged NCAA championship sport, allowing female triathletes the opportunity to be official NCAA student-athletes and participate in competitive draft-legal racing.

Drury University is one of eight Universities in the country to offer this triathlon program. Melanie is looking forward to this next phase in her life and has an open mind and outlook for the future. While attending college Melanie plans to study Communications and Journalism.

Melanie is a very accomplished athlete! Congratulations and best of luck to you and your future endeavors!
