Cabot School District Featured In AETN Project
May 3, 2018

The Cabot School District was invited to be involved in an AETN ArkansasIDEAS project on Sudden Cardiac Arrest. They are putting together a video on this topic and speaking to several key people who have experienced this first hand. The video is expected to be released January 2019.
Head Athletic Trainer Jason Cates, Cabot High School junior Gunter Garvin and Gunter's mother Melissa Garvin spoke to AETN producers about Sudden Cardiac Arrest. They also discussed how proper physical checks for early signs of complications and knowledge of this heart disease is so important.
Gunter shared his personal story with producers. He was an active kid who loved sports and played from an early age. In junior high Gunter played football. That is when a routine physical check changed his life forever. While getting his physical the doctors noticed something abnormal with the rhythm of his heart and would not give him the clearance to play. That was a pivotal moment for Gunter. He soon found out he had an enlarged heart.
Gunter's mother Melissa spoke about that scary moment, the options available to them, and how Gunter and their whole family had to adapt moving forward.
AETN also interviewed Jason about how he and his team discovered Gunter's medical issue, how they were able to get him diagnosed, and potentially prevent a tragedy at CHS.
Gunter's football career was unfortunately cut short, but fortunately he is still able to be involved with athletics. Gunter is now in the sports medicine class at CHS and is a student aide alongside Jason and his team of trainers at practices and athletic events helping injured players.
This will be the third video production the Cabot School District has been involved in with AETN. In 2012, Cabot was featured in their Heat Illness video and in the 2016 Concussion/Bell Ringer video.
Can't wait to see this educational video! Great job to @CabotAT and @GunterGarvin for sharing personal stories & informative information about Sudden Cardiac Death. @CabotHigh #SafetyFirst https://t.co/v08UdSgakA
