CHS Nationally-Recognized Sports Medicine Program Featured By AETN

March 14, 2019

The Cabot School District employs four highly-experienced athletic trainers. Our Sports Medicine Program is nationally-recognized and our athletic trainers mentor other districts in implementing this curriculum in schools across the state.

In fact, AETN recently made a special trip to Cabot to get a first-hand look at our top-notch program. AETN even featured our program during the State High School Basketball Championship games. The crew interviewed Sports Medicine Teacher and Assistant Athletic Trainer Hollie Rush as well as several students. They also had the opportunity to visit two classes.

In our Foundations of Sports Medicine class, students learn hands-on skills including taping, wrapping, spine boarding, fracture stabilization, training and conditioning techniques, and management of emergency situations. They also learn topics such as sports nutrition, psychology of injuries, therapeutic interventions, and legal and ethical concerns of athletic trainers. Students gain their CPR/AED and first aid certifications in this course as well.

In Sports Medicine Injury Assessment, students learn how to assess injuries from head to toe.  Ankle sprains, ACL tears, concussions, muscle strains etc., are covered. This course is very hands-on with students learning how to take a medical history, palpate, perform range of motion testing, and special tests for each body part in order to learn what injury a person may have sustained. Upon completion of this course, students are able to recognize and assess common sports related injuries.

We are extremely proud of our highly experienced athletic trainers and our students who are making a difference in and out of the classroom! This is not the only feature AETN has produced on our district. We have been featured in many documentaries. The latest - Sudden Cardiac Arrest - focused on our CHS students Gunter Garvin, Rhett Thurman, and Head Athletic Trainer Jason Cates and will no doubt save lives.

Thank you AETN for continuing to recognize the importance of our amazing programs and showcasing the great work of our athletic trainers to parents, students, and educators across the state.
