American Hero/Medal of Honor Recipient Visits CHS

October 1, 2019

A true American hero recently visited students at Cabot High School. Hershel “Woody” Williams is the last surviving Medal of Honor recipient from the battle of Iwo Jima in World World II.

The 95-year-old spoke to our history students and CHS AFJROTC cadets about patriotism, the gift of life, the gift of freedom, and relying on one another to unite our country. Cpl. Williams was in town for the dedication of the Gold Star Families Memorial Monument at the Arkansas State Capitol. He gifted our cadets with a model of the monument for helping raise thousands of dollars for the project. Cpl. Williams even autographed it for the cadets.

Cpl. Williams is one of only three surviving Medal of Honor recipients from WWII, the only surviving Marine recipient, and the only surviving recipient from the Pacific theater. On February 23, 1945, his actions against Japanese forces saved many lives. Now an iconic picture, it was on the same day Marines raised the American flag on Mount Suribachi.

Thank you to Cpl. Williams for visiting Cabot High School. It was an honor and a very special day for our students.
