School Board Recognition - April

April 22, 2013

Cabot students were recognized at April's board meeting for their superior accomplishments.

National Merit Scholarship Program
The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition that began in 1955. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT or PSAT, a test which serves as an initial screening of approximately 1.5 million entrants each year, and by meeting published program entry/participation requirements.

Arkansas has 116 students who were selected as National Merit Finalists this year and 5 of those were from Cabot: Rebecca Davis, Hayden Elliott, Clay Killingsworth, Celina Miranda and Emily Riley.

Arkansas Times Academic All Star
The Arkansas Times selected 20 outstanding high school students in the state to be named to their 2013 Academic All-Star Team. This recognition program honors students who perform well in the classroom and display strong leadership skills and community involvement. Celina Miranda was selected as a 2013 Arkansas Times Academic All Star.

Knowledge Master
Teams at Cabot Middle Schools North and South competed with tens of thousands of students in the U.S. and several foreign lands in the recent Knowledge Master Open academic competition. More than 3,000 middle school, junior high and high school teams faced their computers to answer 200 challenging questions in the event, earning points for the speed and accuracy of their answers.

The 13 students on the CMSS team placed 1st in Arkansas. The 8 students on the CMSN team placed 3rd in the state.

Students on the CMSS team were: Zach Dickson, Kobe Heagerty, Olivia Jordan, Jack Lane, Tyler Marston, Jack Neumann, Patrick Shirron, Briana Student, Jessica Vaughn, Kevin Weng, Kevin Wise, Dylan Wood, and Caleb Zerkus.

Students on the CMSN team were: Braydon Bivins, David Balenko, Jaxon Cummings, Cole Fulmer, Drew Fulmer, Connor Greenwood, Chase Terry, and Zach Wilmoth.

Designed to stimulate learning and recognition for academic achievement, the Knowledge Master Open runs on classroom computers to allow all students the opportunity to compete in a large academic event without the expense of traveling to a central site. The competition is presented twice each school year by Academic Hallmarks, a Colorado software publisher.

Wilbur D. Mills Co-op Elementary Quiz Bowl Tournament
Cabot Middle School North and South recently competed in the Wilbur D. Mills Educational Cooperative Elementary Quiz Bowl Tournament. Out of 12 teams that competed, CMSN finished in 1st place and CMSS finished in 3rd place.

Students on the CMSN team were: David Balenko, Braydon Bivins, Jaxon Cummings, Cole Fulmer, Drew Fulmer, Connor Greenwood, Chase Terry and Zach Wilmoth.  The team was coached by G/T specialist Traci Chudy.

Students on the CMSS team were: Zach Dickson, Olivia Jordan, Jack Neumann, Patrick Shirron, Kevin Weng, Kevin Wise, Dylan Wood, and Caleb Zerkus. The team was coached by G/T specialist Jenny O'Shields.
