October 21, 2014

Did you know 116 buses transport about 5,000 students every day at the Cabot School District?  Our bus drivers are constantly working to make sure your students stay safe.

National School Bus Safety Week is October 20th-24th.  It's a public education program designed to remind and teach everyone; parents, students, teachers, motorists, school bus operators and school administrators about the importance of safety.

The theme for 2014:  “At My Stop, You Stop!”

Freddie Hankins has been behind the wheel of a Cabot school bus for 31 years.  She drives the same route her father did.  He was a driver for 40 plus years. Hankins is one of about 130 bus drivers for the Cabot School District. Together they travel 93 routes and cover 45-hundred miles every day. Safety is a priority.

Hankins says, “When I was in college, my second cousin got hit at Lonoke getting off a school bus. A car passed the school bus and I think it knocked her about 300 feet in the air and I still remember it."

And that's why education is crucial.  She says, “They're supposed to stop.  Whenever they see the red lights flashing they are supposed to stop.”

For Hankins, she treats her riders like her own and she wants to make sure they stay safe.

“Nobody ever wants to hurt a child, says Hankins, so just really watch when you're going by a school or a school bus or just being around children.”

School buses carry or most precious cargo.  It's crucial to remember to pay close attention when you see a school bus and to teach children how to be safe when loading and exiting a bus.
