"Girls Who Code"

September 20, 2017

Two Cabot High School students recently took center stage with Lt. Governor Tim Griffin at a “Girls Who Code” event.

This past spring, CHS teacher Danielle Lovellette began a chapter of “Girls Who Code,” to encourage young women to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) field.

Two of Ms. Lovellette's students, senior Nicole Hartsel and sophomore Miranda Thomson, were recently invited to participate in an event hosted by “Girls Who Code” and Walmart. They had the opportunity to meet “Girls Who Code” founder and CEO Reshma Saujani.

Nicole and Miranda were also the only two students among hundreds in attendance that were interviewed on stage by  Lt. Governor Tim Griffin. They discussed how they became interested in technology and why it was so important for them to learn how to code.

The Lt. Governor also talked about Governor Asa Hutchinson's mission to require coding classes in all Arkansas high schools. You may recall Governor Hutchinson visited Cabot High School on his “Computer Science Coding Tour” back in May.

The event took place in Bentonville and Walmart pledged $250,000 to the “Girls Who Code” nonprofit organization.

Congratulations Ms. Lovellette, Nicole, and Miranda for representing the district so well at the event!
