Little Free Pantries Ready To Help District Families

January 12, 2017

The Cabot Girls Soccer Team and Cabot Junior Auxiliary are working to help students and families in need.

They're called Free Little Pantries and are located in Cabot and Austin. The pantries are stocked with food, books, coloring books, toothbrushes, and other personal hygiene items.

Soccer Coach Kerry Castillo recently recruited the help of teacher Jimmy Carpenter and his construction students at Cabot High School. They built the two pantries free of charge. Coach Castillo added legs and doors and installed them at Richie Road Park with the assistance of Cabot Parks and Recreation Executive Director Travis Young. The second pantry is located in Austin at Early Impressions Day Care with the permission of owner Stacy Phillips.

The CHS Girls Soccer Team held a food drive from August to November to collect food for the pantries. Maggie Cope, one of the assistant coaches for the team is also a Cabot JA member and they donated many items to the pantries. The soccer team was also able to secure a grant for the Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market in Cabot to purchase items.

Coach Castillo says the idea for the free little pantries came from social media. He hopes it helps meet the food needs of kids and families in the Cabot School District.
