Qualls (Kindergarten)

Every school must give the Qualls Early Learning Inventory (QELI) to fulfill the mandatory Arkansas Uniform School Readiness Screening for all kindergarten and first grade students who are entering the public school system for the first time. This assessment is given in September as a teacher observation checklist to identify six behavioral characteristics related to school learning. The characteristics are scored as rarely observed, sometimes observed or often observed. It provides a baseline of data on a student to allow the teacher to plan instruction on the appropriate level.
Parents receive a report and explanation of their child’s scores. A plan (AIP or IRI) is designed for children needing extra support in order to be successful in school. QUALLS does not test a child’s ability to learn. It is a readiness checklist. QUALLS scores are not part of the district’s test scores for AYP. Questions or concerns about a child’s score on the QUALLS can be directed to the school counselor.
